About the Show

Well into its second decade, WHQR's Soup To Nuts LIVE! has become one of the Cape Fear region's favorite, live-listening experiences, featuring a wide array of musical genres on its stage.

STNL!'s recording process reflects its commitment to high quality, ongoing success, and the hard work of its technical staff. Each performance is engineered, multitracked, and edited into a one-hour program for broadcast on an upcoming date. In addition, WHQR forwards and cross-promotes the live event (and the later broadcast) across their website, on-air, social media, and related platforms.

Starting in 2023, Live At Ted’s joined in hosting and booking acts for the STNL! show, alternating hosting duties each month with WHQR. Ted’s listening room environment, recording capabilities, and commitment to showcasing original music made for a seamless partnership.

About the Venues

The MC Erny Gallery

WHQR Public Radio set up shop in 1984, in a converted bar in a strip mall in Wilmington. Founded by opera lovers concerned about the disappearance of the Metropolitan Opera on local airways, the station thrived by truly becoming a community station, supported and staffed by public radio lovers. Friends of the Opera, the original name of the founders, became Friends of Public Radio, Inc.

Ten years to the day it first went on the air, the station moved to a new home, the renovated Warwick Building in Wilmington's historic downtown. We added new studios, a custom-designed library and gallery for performances and exhibits, all warmed by blasted brick and mellow pine floors. Then a little over 20 years from its move downtown, WHQR took control of its destiny by purchasing the entire 3rd floor of the of 254 North Front Street.

Over the years, changing demographics and the ever-growing national reputation of programming from NPR, APM, PRI and others has meant competition for airtime among different groups of listeners. As has happened elsewhere, WHQR addressed the issue by starting a second station, in effect broadcasting for 48 hours a day on the combined HQR News and Classical HQR.

Yet WHQR is still known as the small non-profit radio station with a big reputation for unique performances, solid programming and a community spirit that covers southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

In our efforts to offer our audiences a "three-dimensional" radio experience, we encourage listeners to visit us at the station: either drop by while you're downtown or try to attend one of our cultural events. By seeing what public radio sounds like and by meeting fellow enthusiasts with similar interests, you'll find a whole new perspective on our area and our world.

Live At Ted’s

Nestled at the west end of Castle Street right under the Cape Fear River Bridge, Ted’s is truly a one-of-a-kind music experience! Kelly (Ted) and Julia Jewell started the tradition back in 2010 and established the place as the ONLY live music listening room in Wilmington, NC. In 2019, Trent and Whitney Harrison of the local recording studio, Hourglass Studios, took over and continued bringing in local and regional musicians. Some of the most notable performers include Acoustic Syndicate, Steve Forbert, The Kennedys, and Darrell Scott. With only 62 seats available inside this old house turned music venue, patrons and musicians alike get the opportunity to experience a homey, intimate performance.

What is a listening room?

A listening room is a small music venue where listening to and enjoying the music is the primary focus. This type of setting is not like your average bar or brewery where there’s lots of conversation happening - it’s a space where music lovers can come and really listen to music and hear the stories behind their favorite songs. We kindly ask our patrons to keep conversations to a minimum (this is our nice way of saying that talking during the performance is not appropriate). This allows our patrons to experience the pure MAGIC that happens when audience and musician truly connect!

Whether you are inside enjoying the live music with a cold beer or out on the back deck with a glass of wine enjoying a view of the river, Ted’s has a little something for everyone. Most folks tend to say it’s a place that “just feels like home.” We hope you’ll feel at home, too!

Since seating is limited, we encourage patrons to purchase tickets to our shows in advance to guarantee entry.
